Sunken Road (aka Bloody Lane) at Antietam

Confederates of two brigades held this lane for several hours against Federals attacking from camera left to camera right. Casualties were appalling on both sides. But even after several hours and multiple Union attacks, it was only after Southern bodies were piled up 2-3 deep in this lane that the Confederates finally gave it up and ran for the rear. As they did so, Federals shot many down as they climbed the back bank.

This section of the Lane was manned by the North Carolina brigade commanded by Brig. Gen. George Anderson, who was mortally wounded.

That observation tower in the background was built years after the battle.
