Grant’s Last Line at Shiloh

After being caught completely by surprise at daybreak, Union forces were gradually pushed back to this line. Here, Grant had spent a good part of the day preparing a last ditch defense, today known as “Grant’s Last Line.” Here the Federals’ back was against the wall, or at least against the river, which is just about a quarter mile east of this location (in the direction of the camera). After hard fighting, the Confederates reached it just before dusk, but didn’t have enough time or strength to make a final assault that might have won the battle.

Grant received critical reinforcements over night, and by the next morning he was able to attack and eventually drive the Confederates from the field.
