A spectacular view looking westward from the summit of Little Round Top. On the near left is Devil’s Den. Directly in the front is Houck’s Ridge. Just behind Houck’s Ridge is Rose Woods. And just to the left and out of site of the photo is The Wheatfield. On this side of Devil’s Den is a rocky area called The Slaughter Pen. The valley directly below the camera view was called The Valley of Death. Lee’s brigades advanced in this direction from that tree line you see in the distance (behind the white house and barn).
All these areas were the scene of brutal fighting on July 2nd, 1863.
