Gatehouse to Evergreen Cemetery

Gatehouse to Evergreen Cemetery

This is probably the most famous man-made structure of the Battle of Gettysburg. It was erected in 1859 when the Gettysburg town fathers sectioned the area off for the new town cemetery, named Evergreen Cemetery. The hill where the gate stands became known as Cemetery Hill, and the ridge running south behind it was then known as Cemetery Ridge. Both areas would see heavy fighting on July 2nd and July 3rd, 1863.
