View of Houck’s Ridge

This view looks west toward Houck’s Ridge and to its left, Devil’s Den. Federals held both areas on the morning of July 2nd, 1863, but were eventually driven off in heavy fighting. The Union soldiers then retreated across this valley toward Little Round Top, which is behind the camera. That statue memorializes the 40th NY, which made a viliant but futile attempt to stem the Union rout on this spot.
