Steeple of Lutheran Chapel

It was from this steeple at the Lutheran Seminary that Union cavalry commander, Brig. Gen. John Buford, observed the initial fighting west of Gettysburg on the morning of July 1, 1863. Later in the day, when the Confederates had won the field, Robert E. Lee no doubt used the same perch to observe Union lines on Cemetery Hill.
