Antietam – Burnside Bridge

Burnside Bridge over Antietam Creek

Burnside Bridge over Antietam Creek

Two Georgia brigades of Col. Henry Benning’s brigade (about 300 men) managed to hold off an entire Union corps (about 10,000 troops commanded by Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside) for the better part of a day. The Confederates were barricaded up here on the hill, while the Federals rushed the bridge from the opposite side of the creek. It was only after the third attack, and numerous casualties, that Union troops finally swarmed across the bridge and took this hill.
